Teacher/Tutor
Jen grew up in the small town of Binscarth, Manitoba. She moved to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. Jen spent nearly 10 years teaching in elementary schools in Winnipeg, with the majority of her teaching career spent in Kindergarten. She also taught Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, and Reading Recovery. Jen has many experiences running programs for preschool-aged children and their families.
After the birth of her son, Jen became a full-time mom and caregiver. Her son’s Autism and Childhood Apraxia of Speech diagnoses led Jen to experience play therapy, speech and language therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy firsthand, as a parent. Jen became very familiar with RDI Floortime, where she learned to follow her son’s lead and interests, and became his play partner to help facilitate his growth and development and to create a caring, safe, inviting and inclusive learning environment for him. Jen’s son was non-verbal until 6 years of age, so she has experience with using an AAC device and the Proloquo2Go program, which helped give her son a voice when he hadn’t yet found his.
Jen has a passion for teaching and learning with all children, but especially those who are neurodiverse. Her life experiences as a parent to a neurodivergent child have given her understanding, knowledge, and empathy for what other families may also be experiencing.
Jen currently lives in Winnipeg with her husband, her son, and their Shichon pup. She enjoys going on adventures and spending time with her family, wandering through trees and exploring the outdoors, planning parties and activities, and advocating for Autism awareness and acceptance.
